A Different Perspective

A family member spent years being called careless because they missed deadlines and struggled to stay organized. Later, an ADHD evaluation gave everyone a completely different perspective on those behaviors. That experience made me curious about the neurological side of ADHD. Could someone point me toward an accessible explanation of why ADHD shouldn’t be treated as a character flaw or lack of willpower?

Re: A Different Perspective

That “careless” label can hurt a lot, because missed deadlines often looks like laziness when people don’t know it’s executive function. ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects focus, self regulation, and organization, so it’s not a character flaw or lack of willpower. If you want an accessible explanation, check: ADHD treatment in New York for children .Story: my cousin kept forgetting forms until her evaluation made everyone realize the system needed adapting, not scolding.
