Animations in web and app design

Our app feels "stiff" compared to competitors, but every time we add animations, performance tanks. How do you balance polish with speed? Currently using Lottie for simple animations, but complex interactions still lag. Any advice from teams who've solved this?

Re: Animations in web and app design

We battled this exact issue until studying this guide to mobile ui animations . The key insight: Not all animations are created equal. We audited every motion in our app and categorized them by purpose—functional (like button feedback) vs. delightful (like celebratory confetti). For performance-critical areas, we switched to hardware-accelerated properties like opacity and transform. A simple button press that used to require complex SVG animations now uses a barely perceptible scale transform that costs nearly zero resources. The game-changer was implementing "graceful degradation"—our fancy animations only play on devices that can handle them smoothly. Older phones get simplified motions that maintain the UX intent without the lag. Most importantly, we learned to prototype animations in the actual app environment, not just design tools. What looks smooth in After Effects can chug in production. Now we test early and often with real devices.

Really helpful roundup for anyone on the hunt for a dependable web app design agency! I've been trying to find a team that can combine smart functionality with sleek, user-friendly design, and this guide hit the mark. The agencies featured seem well-versed in responsive layouts and up-to-date UX practices. Since I'm currently developing a fairly complex SaaS product, I’m not just looking for something that looks good — I need a design team that truly understands user flows and experience. This article pointed me in the right direction.
