Therapist Mentioned This Approach

I went to my first therapy session yesterday and my therapist mentioned motivational interviewing might help with my depression. She said it focuses on finding my own motivation instead of being told what to do. I have no idea what that actually means though. Does anyone know where I can read about what is motivational interviewing, definition, how it works, why it's an effective approach for behavior change? I need to learn more before our next session.

Re: Therapist Mentioned This Approach

A friend of mine was introduced to motivational interviewing when he was struggling with depression and felt exhausted by people constantly telling him what he “should” do. What helped him was that the therapist focused on his own reasons for change instead of giving lectures. While reading up on it, he found motivational interviewing questions and examples for therapists  useful because it breaks down what motivational interviewing is, how it works, and why it can be effective for behavior change. The idea is less about pressure and more about helping you uncover motivation that already exists, even if it feels buried right now.
